Through its Directorate General for Overseas Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO), the European Commission contributes somewhat to particular initiatives and tasks, such as UNFPA materials, the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme in the Abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, the UNICEF-UNFPA Global Programme to Accelerate Action to End Child wedding, the worldwide Programme to avoid Son Preference and Gender-biased Sex Selection, along with to UNFPA country programmes in every areas.

The EU-UN Spotlight Initiative to eliminate violence against women and girls was launched during the UN General Assembly in September 2017 against this background.
